Analysis of the Main Themes of "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut"
One of the themes of the short story "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut" is dealing with the social consiquences of war. The main charactor, Eloise, is depressed and talking to her freind about her loss of her love. Her love, Walt, died in war because of a bomb explosion. Most of the story is Eloise venting to her freind about Walt. "' Ah, God, he was nice,' Eloise said. 'He was either funny or sweet. Not that damn little-boy sweet, either. It was s pecial kind of sweet.'" (Salinger, 29). That was a quote taken from "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut" and it is one of the many nice things Eloise says about Walt that demonstrates her love for him. As well as saying nice things about Walt, Eloise, near the end of the story, bursts out crying randomly at the thought of him. Another unfortunate part of the story is that Eloise, as well as having her love dead, she married another man and had a child with him. Now Eloise has a family she doesn't really love because she loves someone else. She lives a very sorrowful life which is mostly because of war that killed Walt. Other themes that relate to this story is love and death.
Death is a main theme of "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut" because Eliose has a hard time dealing with death and she indirectly takes it out on her daughter, Ramona. Eloise has a lack of love for her daughter and it is because Eloise mainly focuses on greiving for Walt. Eloise shows her lack of caring for Ramona because near the end of the story Eloise makes her daughter cry. She makes Ramona cry because while Eloise is in a drunk she forces Ramona to get rid of her imaginary freinds. This fact shows that Eloise is slightly mentally unstable. She might be mentally unstable because of the serious greiving she is going through. DEath is just one of the themes of "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut"
